Slaughterhouse protest highlights World Farm Animal Day observance
On October 2nd, FARM arranged the largest slaughterhouse protest in U.S. history at the Farmer John pig slaughterhouse in Los Angeles. The plant slaughters up to 6,000 pigs per day and is known locally for its extensive murals depicting happy pigs cavorting in grassy meadows.
A hundred local activists, led by FARM president Alex Hershaft, picketed the plant chanting slogans. Two participants were arrested for blocking trucks filled with screaming pigs. The event has been documented in a 10-minute video, more than a hundred photos and a Facebook page.
Five TV stations, a couple of radio stations, and a Spanish-language newspaper covered the protest. Links to the news reports are here.
