AR Conference 2009

Jane Velez-Mitchell, anchor of "Issues With Jane Velez-Mitchell" on the HLN Channel (formerly CNN's Headline News), received the Celebrity Animal Advocate Award at the Animal Rights 2009 National Conference held in Los Angeles on July 16-19th. Actress Elaine Hendrix was recognized with the Guardian Award and long-time activist Bill Dyer was honored by the Lifetime Achievement Award by In Defense of Animals.

Nathan Runkle, founder and executive director of Mercy For Animals, was inducted into the U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame (arconference.org/ARHOF.htm) by AR2009 presenters. Grassroots activists David Bemel of Action For Animals and Lauren Ornelas of Food Empowerment Project received the Henry Spira Grassroots Animal Rights Activist Awards. Jack Nunn of Win Animal Rights was recognized as the Young Animal Rights Activist of the Year.

Awards for the Most Effective Animal Rights Campaigns went to cable channel PSAs by Compassion Over Killing and to undercover factory farm investigations by Mercy For Animals, in the vegan campaigns category. In the other AR campaigns category, the winners were the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty campaign by Win Animal Rights and the Musashi whale defense campaign by Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. More than a thousand votes were cast in this contest.
