The December, 2013 issue of the journal Nature suggests a role played by a
residue of the amino acid cysteine in the cellular growth and proliferation of
Scientists at the Institute of Cancer Research in London found this protein
residue (named CaaX) to exist in 120 different mammalian tissues which include
cows, pigs, and chickens.
CaaX = C - (cysteine), a - (aliphatic amino acids having an open-ended
n-terminus), X = (cysteine, serine, methionine, alanine)
Researchers report that CaaX:
"...(H)ave essential roles in multiple signaling pathways, controlling processes
such as proliferation, differentiation and carcinogenesis."
Notmilk has recently (November 13, 2013) written that animal protein, as opposed
to plant protein, contains an abundance of cysteine and methionine which are
converted to homocysteine in human livers. Many scientists have called
homocysteine the key to heart disease.
The center atom of cysteine and methionine is sulfur. Notmilk also has written
that homocysteine is also a key to cancer and osteoporosis, as consumption of
animal proteins cause an acid condition in the blood which is neutralized by the
leaching of calcium from one's bones. See:
More scientific support for adopting a plant-based diet? You betcha! Eating
animal protein is a losing lifestyle.
