Chickens in cages: Prop 2 working "as planned"

The following was published in the Feb. 19, 2015 issue of the Sacramento Bee -- in response to an HSUS Op Ed entitled, incredibly: "Proposition 2 is working just as planned."

Hens in Cages, Egg on Faces

The operation was a success, but the patient died. That's essentially what Jennifer Fearing of the Humane Society of the United States has to say about Proposition 2 and its non-enforcement.

Prop 2 was famously promoted to California voters in 2008 as a ban on all egg factory cages statewide. Sadly, six years later, most California egg laying hens remain locked in cages.

Don't worry, says Fearing, the industry is now being "encouraged" to voluntarily "honor" the measure. In other words, after squandering more than $10 million for its passage, the Humane Society is acting as if Prop 2 was merely an advisory measure -- rather than the enforceable anti-cruelty law promised to voters.

Had HSUS corrected the glaring flaws in Prop 2 prior to putting it on the ballot, California's hens would no longer be suffering in cages.

Humane Farming Association

The operation was a success, but the patient died. That's essentially what Jennifer Fearing of the Humane Society of the U.S. has to say about the non-existent enforcement of Proposition 2--and the fact that MOST egg laying hens in California are still suffering in cages.

Don't worry, says Fearing, the industry is being "encouraged" to voluntarily "honor" the measure.

In other words, after spending more than $10 million for its passage, HSUS now acts as if Prop 2 was merely an advisory measure--rather than the enforceable anti-cruelty law promised to voters and donors.
