Two top scientists at UAB have been barred by the federal government from receiving research grants and contracts after investigations revealed the falsification of animal study results. The transplant medicine studies were published in more than a dozen journals from 1998 through 2005, and had to be retracted, according to documents released Tuesday.

In a voluntary agreement with the U.S. Office of Research Integrity, Dr. Juan R. Contreras was barred from receiving funding for three years, and Judith M. Thomas, Ph.D., was barred for 10 years.
