State Fair butter cow doused in red paint; animal rights group takes credit Vlasak, the Animal Liberation spokesman, said he does not know who committed the vandalism at the Iowa State Fair or any other protest action, but is willing to explain the reasons behind the actions. “We certainly applaud their efforts,” Vlasak said. Extreme protests are necessary because the meat and dairy industries have more money than animal rights activists and often use that money to influence lawmakers to stifle efforts to expose animal conditions at livestock operations, Vlasak said.

Mink farm sabotage spawns warning; Abusers Worried Nicoal R. Sheen, Los Angeles press officer with the North American Liberation Press Office, said it’s become necessary for animal activists to “liberate innocent beings” because legal protests haven’t worked. NY Times: Can We See Our Hypocrisy to Animals? The slaughter was monstrous, but it was also mystifying — which is the way it often is. I’ve interviewed war criminals in a half-dozen countries, and it’s always bewildering how the nice old person across from me, so graciously concerned with how much milk I want in my coffee, could have committed atrocities.

Socialists and the animal question The national vegan population is increasing rapidly, doubling between 2009 and 2011, according to a Harris Interactive poll. And yet the socialist left remains particularly inhospitable for those concerned with animal domestication.

LP Hoopla Interview with Press Officer Nicoal R. Sheen There are many ways in which we can eliminate speciesism. One being the most personal: living a vegan lifestyle. Veganism is only the first step though. One can organize, protest and participate in unified days of action. However, out of all the methods and tactics concerning the liberation of animals, direct action is most effective for animals. Direct action includes but is not limited to: liberation of animals from confinement and places of exploitation, and economic sabotage which breaks down industries monetarily and deters many from continuing business as usual.

The Cruelty of Industrial Technology by Walter Bond There is no brutality as wicked as systematic cruelty, and systematic cruelty only becomes widespread by aid of technology. More on Chelsea Manning

About: Nobel Peace Prize nominee Chelsea E. Manning (formerly know as Bradley Manning) is the a 25-year-old Army intelligence analyst who released the Collateral Murder video that exposed the killing of unarmed civilians and two Reuters journalists, by a US Apache helicopter crew in Iraq. Manning also shared documents, known as the Afghan War Diary, the Iraq War Logs, and series of embarrassing US diplomatic cables. She stated these documents where some of the most important historical documents of our time. These documents were published by the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, and they have illuminated such issues as the true number and cause of civilian casualties in Iraq, along with a number of human rights abuses by U.S.-funded contractors and foreign militaries, and the role that spying and bribes play in international diplomacy.

Soldiers are promised fair treatment and a speedy trial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). However, the soldiers responsible for PFC Manning’s care took it upon themselves to abuse her by keeping her locked up in solitary confinement for the first 10 months of her incarceration. During this time, Manning was denied meaningful exercise, social interaction, sunlight, and on a number of occasions she was forced to stay completely naked. These conditions were unique to Manning and are illegal even under US military law, as they amount to extreme pre-trial punishment. In March 2011, chief US State Department spokesperson PJ Crowley called PFC Manning’s treatment at the Quantico, Virginia, Marine Corps brig “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.” He was forced to resign shortly after admitting this. Since resigning, he has stated that the prosecution’s heavy-handed persecution of PFC Manning has undermined the government’s credibility.
