Smithfield Foods Inc. has fired three people – two workers and a supervisor –
at a farm in Waverly where an animal-rights group last week accused the company
of abusing pigs.
The Humane Society of the United States released a video showing pregnant sows
at the farm – owned by Smithfield subsidiary Murphy-Brown LLC – cramped in
“gestation crates.” In the video, workers also prodded and tossed pigs.
