Feds cite circus over elephant condition


Animal rights activists are urging Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to yank one of its prized elephants from its San Diego show after the US Department of Agriculture cited the circus for failure to properly treat and diagnose the elephant's illness.

Circus veterinarians say Sarah, a 54-year-old Asian elephant who has been with the circus more than three decades -- has had a chronic condition since at least 1997 and that it is not serious. They are appealing last month's USDA citation, which alleges the circus violated the Animal Welfare Act.
