October certainly had to be the busiest month we have ever had since ARAN was formed many years ago. Through October we organized peaceful protests around the country, responded to several enquiries by post, over 100 emails for information on animal rights, how people can join and get active, received calls and specific enquiries from the media, other organizations and the public. Organized several stands on the streets and helped activists in many parts of Ireland, the UK and around Europe with ideas on organizing campaigns, protests and events! Visited and met with many different animal rescue groups and sanctuaries and met with many of the group's management to discuss how we can work together to make our work more effective.

ARAN also coordinated the worldwide candle light vigil for greyhounds on October 15th, a special thank you to all including the many greyhound action groups in the UK, Europe, Canada, USA, Australia and also to the vigils held here in Ireland and to our friends in Belfast who organized a stand to support the day. ARAN continues to grow, on a monthly basis we are now working with more activists, members of the public, groups here in Ireland, the UK and around the world along with our strong presence we continue to hold in the media. What is so encouraging is that people are now becoming more aware of cruelty to animals and if they have the free time they are wanting to do anything they possibly can to stand up against the industry's that continue to exploit animals. But we are making progress here in Ireland, and thanks to everyone who continues to help our work for animals along with other groups across the country and around the world that are working just as hard to fight animal abuse, we are a family and we need to stay strong and committed to each other in order to win for the animals we all so dearly love. ARAN has many exciting plans for the future and we are aiming to continue to grow and remain strong, positive and focused on our overall aim to stop animal abuse and to promote the rights of all animals.

Please do read about some of the main work we have undertaken in October.

A heartfelt thank you, John Carmody Founder of ARAN in Ireland.

ARAN COORDINATES FIRST WORLDWIDE CANDLE LIGHT VIGIL FOR GREYHOUNDS

In August we came up with a creative and worthwhile idea of an international candle light vigil day for greyhounds. Once we had all the details of this 'new' event planned we immediately began contacting greyhound and animal protection groups around the world. The push for this special day came when many friends and activists who are involved daily in the fight for animal rights and the ongoing work to stop greyhound exploitation, everyone who contacted us thought that this would be a great idea. On October 15th we scheduled the day where several events not only just being a vigil, but street stalls and information awareness, along with local media coverage helped make this first day a success. Thanks to many groups who happily got involved, events and vigils were held in Ireland, Northern Ireland, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Australia, Canada and USA. We are glad that everyone's events went well and we are hoping that this idea and event will cling onto greyhound protection groups around the world and make October 15th 2006 an even bigger event for the greyhounds that need your voice.

Can we please say a huge thank you to all the groups and activists involved and thanks for your commitment. For those of you still wanting to know more about how greyhounds suffer in racing please visit the very informative www.greyhoundaction.org.uk  or if you think you can organize an event for next year please send ARAN an email and we'll add you to the list.

Remember there are many local greyhound action and protection groups near you who are doing a super amazing job at helping these wonderful and innocent creatures, we can help put you in touch with your nearest group or indeed for the organizers of this years events, so please feel free to contact us today, remember we're in this together! Although no media release went out to publicize this event, many national newspapers contacted us including Irish Mirror and Independent.

ARAN HELPS SUPPORT GATEWAY TO HELL CAMPAIGN TO STOP PRIMATE IMPORTS

Every year hundreds of thousands of animals are shipped and flown all over the world to breeding farms, laboratories, hospitals and medical schools to be used in experiments. In Mauritius thousands of primates are caught in the wild where they are transported to many countries including the UK where they are one of the largest users of animals in experiments. Thanks to the amazing campaign launched by Gateway to Hell the pressure to stop these imports is building up and already airlines are stopping the transportation of primates and other animals for vivisection. Gateway to Hell is now focusing their efforts on encouraging Thomas Cook to stop selling holidays to Mauritius until the country refuses to export primates. Earlier this month ARAN organized a peaceful protest outside their sales store in Dublin.

Activists first entered the store before starting the demonstration and took it directly into the store, shortly after being removed we continued the protest outside with local dedicated Dublin activists. The day went really well and we always find it really surprising as to how many people simply do not know about animal experiments and companies involved, so remember every protest or action you take really does count. Please get behind the Gateway to Hell campaign and support them today, please visit www.gatewaytohell.net.

ARAN SPEAKS OUT AGAINST 'FARM' ANIMALS BEING PAINTED TO SUPPORT SPORTS TEAM

When ARAN heard about the farmer in Kerry who painted all of his 'farm' animals to support his local team we immediately began to contact officials to complain about this. Cows, Sheep, ducks and other animals were painted the colors of Kerry to support an upcoming game in which the local farmer was supporting. We believe that this was an awful decision to make as it sets precedent for children to go off and do the very same with their companion animals or indeed any animals that may come into their sight and we also strongly believe that the painting of the animals completely violated the rights of these animals in which they were basically being made a spectacle out of. On a Kerry radio station John Carmody blasted not only the farmer involved, but, also the local Kerry SPCA inspector who thought this was perfectly ok as the animals were not harmed. John Carmody speaking on behalf of ARAN pointed out that this is horribly cruel to the animals involved, not only did it completely violate their rights as animals, it showed complete disregard for the animals, it also sent a very strong message out to many people who read about this in the media that animals can be used in any way 'humans' can see fit and that children who read or seeing these animals painted may possibly contemplate doing the very same to other animals including their companions. John pointed out that the animals should NOT of being painted and instead the farmer could of simply painted his walls, his house or even himself the color of the Kerry flag, but to leave the animals out of it. We also want to thank Eileen Lynham who lives in Dublin for raising this issue with the media in Kerry and the ISPCA where she pressured them to do something to stop this painting on the animals, also there has being many reports of members of the public speaking out against the animals being painted too. ARAN will speak out for the rights of all animals. We received media coverage for this issue on Irish Examiner, Hoghound and Radio Kerry.

WELL DONE - AND WELCOME TO OUR GROWING FAMILY!!!

* Well done to Heather McGarrigle from Belfast who recently organized a KFC protest in which her boyfriend dressed up as the chicken and a local vegetarian contact for the Belfast Beth Gourley. Because of Heather's protest 6 media photographers showed up to cover her event and Heather also did 1 radio interview about how cruel KFC really is. Just last month the news broke in Belfast of a person who was eating inside one of the local KFC's where she was eating some 'chicken' and the found the blood of the animal who died for it, once the media got hold of this it broke in headlines everywhere! Well done to Heather and all involved on the day, thankfully more people are now aware of KFC and may hopefully choose a humane and fun vegetarian diet. Www.kfccruelty.co.uk

* Well done to all the volunteers at Clare Animal Welfare (CAW) for their tremendous amount of work that they are doing in speaking out for animals. Not only does (CAW) help homeless and abandoned animals, they also help people who cannot afford to spay & neuter their animals and they also run regular street information stands and also take part in many fun, educational peaceful protests on occasions. (CAW) are amazing, please do visit their website to learn more about their work, www.clareanimalwelfare.com .

* Thank you goes to Vivienne from Northern Ireland Against Animal Experiments who recently set up an information stand in Belfast to promote the greyhound vigil day and other campaigns that are running to stop cruelty to animals. Vivienne continues to do her best in Belfast, if you are from Belfast and want to get involved with this positive work for the animals we can put you in touch today.

* A huge congratulations to ARAN friend and supporter Elaine Heagney who recently had her first beautiful baby girl Emily. Well done to mam & dad and their two companion Charlie and Cara who are both rescues and now live a wonderful happy and healthy lifestyle with Elaine, dad and baby girl. We can only imagine Emily will grow up like mam Elaine who continues to help local animals here in Limerick city. Well done to our friends and colleagues at Limerick Animal Welfare (LAW) who continue to rescue and rehome abused, neglected and unwanted animals here in Limerick city. LAW also organized a candle light vigil this month outside the local greyhound racing stadium along with an investigation earlier this year into local greyhound sales down at the stadium. JOIN ARAN'S RESEARCHER AND COORDINATOR PROJECT?

Yes, when we are not organizing protests, stands and events around the country we are doing research. Researcher: This is vitally important when it comes to gathering more information about an upcoming project or event and much of what you read is from the results of people doing voluntary research for ARAN here in Ireland that helps us get through the work. Researchers basically give any of their free time and you will then be added to a list, so for when we need information or fact finding missions we know we can count on you. Coordinator: If you have free time on your hands and reckon you can work with activists, groups and volunteers here in Ireland and abroad on both our own projects and the campaigns and programs of other groups we support, we want to hear from you! Coordinators have just recently worked on helping with a Free Mandy elephant appeal, our 'bloody' anti-fur demo in Dublin, vegetarian day here in Limerick, local college AR support and much more. If you can give some free time to our work for animal rights here in Ireland please get in touch today, you are the people the animals need and the more hands we have the more we can and will speak out for animals.

NUDE ARAN PROTESTERS TURN UP OUTSIDE AUSTRALIAN EMBASSY

Earlier this month members of ARAN turned up outside the Australian embassy wearing little more than a pair of skin colored thongs, drenched in fake blood along with the Australian flag tattooed onto their bums. Accompanying them were some tremendous Dublin activists who happily came along to support the event. Flanked by over 6 photographers including RAY SHAH ex Big Brother participant, who now works for Dublin's Q102fm radio, interviewed ARAN's Gemma Wallace about the Australian Wool boycott and resumption in the campaign. The demonstration was a tremendous success as tons of staff looked out the windows of the whole 7 floors to the Australian Embassy whilst we were covered in blood and had earlier attempted to enter the embassy until being stopped by police, whilst this was happening the media were loving it and continued to take tons of pictures whilst police tried to caution us.

Many thanks to everyone who turned up and to the people who could not, but yet written and called the embassy on the day. Please visit www.SaveTheSheep.com  for more information on the campaign resumption and to support PETA. Thanks to all the media that showed up on the day including Irish Examiner, Irish Star, Evening Herald, Irish Independent, The Sun, Association and Q102fm radio.

ARAN TARGETS METEOR NETWORK PROVIDER TO END ORANGUTAN TV COMMERCIAL

In October Meteor which is Ireland's national mobile phone network provider ran a TV commercial featuring a real Orangutan named Harry. ARAN began to contact the company and their media and visual production companies called Vizeum and QMC Publicis who have being responsible for doing the media work on the commercial and the production of the advert itself. ARAN also contact Animal Defenders International and Captive Animals Protection Society to ask for their help in getting Meteor to drop this commercial and vow never to use animals or primates in commercials again, the also then began to send out news releases and action alerts to their members too and because of their help we managed to bombard Meteor with messages of support for the commercial to be dropped. Letters and emails have being sent to Meteor from Ireland, Northern Ireland, UK, Argentina, Canada, USA, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Holland, Australia, Dubai, India, Iceland and Austria, thank you to everyone who is writing and who have sent us on Meteor's response, we'll keep you posted as discussed. ARAN is continuing to pressure Meteor to never use animals in commercials again and we will keep you updated with their decision. If you can write to Meteor please email them today at info@meteor.ie, advertising@meteor.ie and let us know their reply.

Please visit CAPS and ADI's website for more information on the use of animals in advertising. www.captiveanimals.org or www.ad-international.org

ANIMAL PEOPLE SUPPORT ARAN'S ONGOING WORK TO HELP ANIMALS

With thanks to the support of USA animal protection group Animal People, John Carmody our founder of ARAN was able to travel to the USA for two weeks where he visited Best Friends Animals Society sanctuary where it lies on over 33,000 acres of land and over 1500 rescued animals www.bestfriends.org .

John met with Best Friends founder & president he also traveled to the Helen Woodward Animal Centre where he met with president and staff of this wonderful establishment and to the CHAMP conference on homeless and abandoned animal management. Also this month John traveled to Croatia to the attend the ICAWC conference held in Dubrovnik again for helping animals on the streets, John was lucky to meet many directors and presidents of animal rescue groups around the world and president of Dogs Trust Clarissa Baldwin.

This month Animal People visited John here in Ireland where he organized a huge visit to several animal rescue groups around the country. Animal People's work to help local animal rescue groups around the country is truly amazing and sometimes Animal People are often the only life line for struggling rescue groups in country's where financial assistance is not known.

ARAN TARGETS LOCAL METEOR STORE IN PROTEST AT THE USE OF ORGANUTAN IN COMMERCIAL

ARAN recently began targeting the Irish mobile phone network provider because of their use of a real Orangutan in a commercial advertising their products and services. Our colleagues at CAPS and ADI have also begun putting pressure on Meteor to never use animals again and are continuing to do so. In October ARAN organized a peaceful protest outside their sales store in Limerick city to protest the use of the Orangutan with a banner reading CRAP COVERAGE AND CRAP RESPECT FOR ANIMALS - METEOR STOP USING ANIMALS IN ADVERTS protesters urged people to contact Meteor to voice their disgust. ARAN is planning on organizing similar protests in other cities around Ireland over the next few weeks. Please support ARAN, CAPS and ADI in urging Meteor to stop using animals in commercials and advertising.
