Peter J. Li, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of East Asian
Politics at the University of Houston-Downtown and China Policy Specialist
of Humane Society International, first came to the U.S. from China to study
at Syracuse University in 1987. Almost immediately, he had several "cultural
shocks," as he puts it. I asked him about two epiphanies, in particular,
which -- to my way of thinking -- are truly emblematic of one man’s
remarkable journey.
